Brief Explanation of the Topic
A noun is a naming word. It names a person, place, animal, thing, group, feeling, idea, quality, or material. In Class 5, students should understand nouns in more detail and learn how nouns work in sentences.
A common noun is a general name, such as teacher, city, river, animal, or book.
A proper noun is a special name, such as Rohan, India, London, Monday, or Diwali. Proper nouns always begin with capital letters.
A collective noun names a group of people, animals, or things. Examples are team, army, class, flock, herd, crowd, and committee.
An abstract noun names a feeling, quality, idea, or state. Examples are honesty, kindness, courage, childhood, wisdom, and freedom.
A material noun names a substance or material from which things are made. Examples are gold, silver, cotton, wood, iron, plastic, wool, and glass.
A countable noun can be counted. Examples are books, apples, chairs, pens, and students.
An uncountable noun cannot be counted one by one. Examples are water, milk, sugar, rice, advice, furniture, and information.
Nouns also have gender. Masculine nouns refer to males, such as king, boy, father, and uncle. Feminine nouns refer to females, such as queen, girl, mother, and aunt. Common gender nouns can refer to both male and female, such as teacher, student, doctor, and friend. Neuter gender nouns refer to non-living things, such as table, book, chair, and car.
Possessive nouns show ownership. We use apostrophes to show possession.
Examples:
- The boy’s bag is blue.
- The girls’ classroom is clean.
- Riya’s pencil is sharp.
